Retinal Imaging

When you choose Visual Health Doctors of Optometry, you’ll have the option of adding retinal imaging to your annual eye exam. Retinal imaging is a painless component of the diagnostic eye exam. It uses a high-resolution camera to take colored photographs of the back of the eye, including the retina, blood vessels, and optic nerve. This simple, painless test allows our doctors to see the inner parts of the eye and note changes in eye health and vision.

Why Should I Choose Retinal Imaging?

While a comprehensive eye exam with dilation is always recommended, adding retinal imaging to your exam does provide valuable information to your doctor. Retinal imaging offers a more broad and accurate look at the retina.

If you or your family have a history of diabetes, retinal toxicity, macular degeneration, or glaucoma, retinal imaging is helpful and can make early detection of eye diseases and retinal illness easier. Many of our patients are surprised to learn that signs of high blood pressure or hypertension, diabetes, and some forms of cancer are first evident in the retina. With early detection, quick treatment is available and essential to preventing vision loss and for your overall health.

Additionally, because retinal imaging is a computerized procedure it allows for any concerns to be automatically examined, diagnosed, and saved for your medical records, this means your eye doctor will be able to easily compare test results every year during your annual eye exam. This aspect of retinal imaging is important in monitoring treatment outcomes. It also tracks the progress of diseases and notices any irregularities quickly.
