Contact Lenses in Fairfax, VA – Don’t DIY Your Contact Solution

Have you ever gone to clean your contacts, only to realize that the solution bottle is empty? Maybe you’ve left the house in a hurry and forgotten to pack your solution. If so, you know that you need a replacement fast! While it’s necessary to find something to clean your contacts with, you should never try a DIY solution. Our expert for contact lenses in Fairfax, VA, explains why here.

Why Contact Solution Is Necessary

When you wear contacts, proteins and bacteria from your eyes build up on your lenses. This buildup can lead to eye infections if you don’t clean your contacts well. Contact solution cleans and protects your contact lenses. Solution usually contains boric acid and detergents to disinfect and safely remove protein buildup, as well as ingredients that keep contacts moisturized.

Types of Contact Solutions

There are different types of contact solutions – chemical-free, preservative-free, or solutions for sensitive eyes. There are also multipurpose contact solutions that cover rinsing, cleaning, and disinfecting all at once.

Why Not Do it Yourself?

If you find yourself out of contact solution or are looking for a more economical option, you may be tempted to try a DIY method. There are many issues with this, and eye care professionals warn that made-at-home solutions can be dangerous for eye health. Here are just a few reasons to not DIY this important part of your contact lens routine:

  • Nothing used in a DIY solution is sterile. Bacteria and contaminants will stick to your contacts and can lead to infection or eye damage.
  • Tap water, which contains bacteria and microorganisms, can cause a rare, painful disease that infects the cornea and can even cause blindness.
  • Boiled, distilled water isn’t recommended, either – there’s no way to be certain if you’ve killed all the bacteria in the water.

Don’t try saline solution on its own, either. Saline solution has no cleaning properties and leaving your contacts in saline can breed bacteria and lead to dangerous eye infections. If you’re out of contact solution, don’t DIY at all – only the right product will protect your eye health!

I went in for a contact lens exam. The optometrist was great. Very knowledgeable. Took the time to educate me on visual acuity. Was a great resource from a Physician's standpoint. I was leaving for a trip to Costa Rica the following day and was give 10 days worth of contact lens to try. Will return next week to let him know things worked out well and will try another brand of lens!- Naheed M. best-ashburn-arlington-woodbrifge-fairfax-springfield-vienna-va-optometry
Excellent and attentive! I waited for all of five minutes after showing up early to my appointment, and everyone who worked there gave very thorough and detailed explanations of what tests were happening, why, and what the costs were. I've never had such a positive experience at an eye provider. I would highly recommend them!- Melanie F. best-ashburn-arlington-woodbrifge-fairfax-springfield-vienna-va-optometry
"Excellent doctor's office. Everyone is polite and whether you're speaking with the doctor or selecting new frames, you can take your time and they will help you make the best decision for you. They do not try to sell you expensive items you don't need - which happened to me at one of the chain optometrists in the area. Definitely recommend."- Brookes C. best-ashburn-arlington-woodbrifge-fairfax-springfield-vienna-va-optometry
